Active Student week

This week (2-7 April) there is the week of the “Active student”. The week of activities acclaims students who commit themselves to things for the university other than their studies, for instance participation in a study association, Student Council, or student politics.

We wish to make the society aware of the active such students do. The perception of most people is still that students, especially those students who are not following courses but obtain full-time board functions, are doing little more than drinking beer and hopping from one social event to another. (although one cannot deny a degree of justice in such a percepton, reality is still a little different)… :) Active students work on making the university and Amsterdam better! They are the ones who pay attention to the well-being of the students and the university and their contribution is often invaluable to positive change.

If you are one of them, join in for Active Student week!

Look for all the workshops the councils and study associations organize at:

www.actievestudent.nl

Show your commitment to the active student!

Join the prostests: March 19-23

As you may know the government of The Netherlands is continuing its “reform” of the higher education. The ultimate aim of the efforts is to squeeze the country’s educational budget to the bare minimum.

Who benefits from this? The students do not!

Governments under financial pressure commonly begin slashing budgets for education, health-care, pension and so on. However, The Netherlands, known for its liberties and knowledge intensive economy should not continue along the path of destroying the foundations of access to the very knowledge it so cherishes (does it?).

One of the ironic things from all this, is that the politicians that are most resonant about giving students less time to stay at the Universities, have themselves taken their time with Alma Mater. Now, when their turn to pay our bill came, politicos bailed.

We urge you to come and join us on various peaceful protest activities that will take place next week, March 19-23. Let them rethink new approved changes to higher education so that The Netherlands can still pride itself with our knowledge.

More info on protests here.

The activities to take place:

Monday, March 19:
Swedisch course, 16.00 at PC Hoofthuis

Tuesday, March 20th:
Masterclass: stressing the importance of the Master, location and time to be announced (likely 13.00 @ Spui)

Wednesday, March 21st:
Cycling to The Hage: against shortening of the OV travel subsidy.

Thursday march 22nd:
VU organizes an “Actionday”

Friday march 23rd:
“Black day”: show your regret for bygone dreams, 16h at Dam Square.

See you there!

On Exchange in Europe via Erasmus in 2012-2013

As a student of the FEB you can study a period abroad at one of UvA’s partner universities in Europe via the Erasmus programme. If you would like to do so in 2012-2013, it is important to start your orientation, because the preparations might take some time and the application deadline for studying abroad during the academic year 2012-2013 is approaching: March 1, 2012.

If you want to study abroad, it is best to choose a minor track and go on an exchange in the semester that is reserved for that purpose in the third year. You then can still graduate within 3 years for your Bachelor. You can study abroad as a Master student as well. This however, will take you an extra semester to graduate, plus you will have to ask permission from the Board of Examiners by sending them your study program with your planned study abroad. For the master a maximum of 15 EC of extra credits is allowed.

To be eligible for an exchange in Europe you will have to have obtained at least 90 EC at the moment of your planned departure.

For more information and application (the application form will be online in the end of January 2012) please refer to the website of the FEB-International Office

If you have any questions after your orientation, you may call or visit the office hours of the International Office (see website) or mail studyabroad-feb @ uva . nl

Good luck!
