Sinterklaas survey: win an iPod Nano

Dear Student,

Please fill out this survey and win an iPod Nano! http://studentenraad.nl/enquete/

Under all participants* who leave their e-mail address we will give away 2 iPod Nano 8GB’s.

We are doing this for two reasons: first of all, it’s Sinterklaas (a traditional Dutch festival with lots of presents)! And secondly to represent you even better, we need to know how you think about things in the Faculty and this survey provides this opportunity. The results of the survey will of course be anonymous.
Survey closes on Sunday, December 4.

*To be eligible to win an iPod nano you need to be registered as a student at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Economics and Business.

Summary: Info session for MSc Operations Research

Last Thursday, the information meeting that the Faculty Student Council (FSR) requested together with students about ORM took place. Here’s a short summary:

Due to the reorganisation of the FEB, the research group ORM will be abolished as of April 1st 2012. With this in mind the Faculty proposed to also abolish the MSc ORM. Currently, this decision is stuck on the level of the Central, UvA board because the Joint Council (the Central Student and Works Council) overruled the Rector’s (head of the University) decision to abolish the MSc program. Now the UvA board has to decide to: either continue the program or to begin a legal procedure that would, in the end, most likely would lead to abolishing the MSc ORM according to the Faculty.

The FSR is doing all it can to make sure that it will be known as soon as possible what will happen to the MSc ORM. Below, there are some bullet points that could clarify a bit:

The Faculty has the obligation to make sure that the program they provide is up to the current standards in any situation and they are committed to doing so.

  • The BSc program will stay as it is.

The MSc program’s future is uncertain.

  • This year (2011/2012) it will stay as it is and there are plans to have an extra round of resits before September 1st 2012.
  • For the year 2012/2013, currently the registration is open. This would mean that for that year the MSc program also has to be provided; how that is done, for instance by external staff or in collaboration with the VU University, is up to the FEB. Aside the first normal year of the MSc program, students will always get one year extra to finish their MSc. Again, this might either be by external staff or by collaborating with the VU University.

FSR is looking for an Assistant

The Faculty Student Council Economics and Business is looking for a council assistant.

Due to circumstances the FSR now has 7 instead of 8 council members, therefore we are looking for a council assistant.

A council assistant works as a regular council member on the cases in the council but has no voting right in the meetings, since he/she is not elected. You are expected to invest 8 hours a week and will receive a compensation.

For further enquiries or application with motivation and cv please send an e-mail to Birk Jonker: birk @ studentenraad . nl before November 25th.

Regulations Update: taking exams home

We hope your exam week went well and you are feeling satisfied with your results!

If you have not yet received the grade, keep in mind that the professor has 18 working days to correct exams and publish your overall score for the course.

There has been another development. In our previous post we wrote about how students have the right to take exams home. For some students that has now changed.

The new rule as written in the OER (Onderwijs- en Examenregelingen) states, that only the Bachelor students are permitted to take their exams home; while the Master students are not. That means that as a Bachelor student at the Faculty of Economics and Business you will still be able to take your exam home after completing the exam, while as a Master student you cannot.

Faculty’s argument for it is the quality of the exam itself. While Bachelor courses are usually broader with wider topics, Master courses are more specific. Therefore, professors have on hand a wider selection of possible questions they can ask to a student in a BSc course and such selection is not available for the MSc course. Ultimately, exam questions for Master courses could become very specific overtime and would lead to inadequate measure of general knowledge of the course.

We hope to have informed you sufficiently. If you have any comments or contributions regarding this topic, feel free to contact us through social media or email.

Best regards,
Student Council Faculty Economics and Business

Exam period tips

Hello Student,

Yet again and, as always, too soon, the exam period has started.

We wish you success with your upcoming exams and other assessments you migth have this week, and we hope that the study week has given you enough time and motivation to prepare well.

Before you start, there are some tips you might find useful.

1. All lecturers should provide at least one trial exam or equivalent. Make sure that your professor has done that. If not, you can always request a trial exam as it is part of the University policy.

2. After the actual examination, professors are not allowed to request the test form back from you. So students are able to take the exam questions home in case they want to revisit the questions later. This also is a Faculty policy.

3. We advice you to fill out the course evaluation form that you will receive on the exam. It only takes a few minutes of your time, and can be a valuable source of information for the Faculty as well as for the Student Council so that we can continue working on improving your educational experience.

Again, best of luck on your exams!

Dear Student,

We would like to invite you all to the information drink on March 15th.

At the moment the FSR-FEB is looking for new people for next year’s student council. Every regular student of the FEB can either try to join one of the existing parties (Sefa or Lijst Mei) or start their own party for the elections in May. Remember that the deadline for subscribing as a party is on the 4th of April.

For people who are interested in next year’s student council or who just want to share their opinion about the faculty with us, we invite you for an information drink on march 15th in the Krater at 17.00 (Roeterseiland 11). During this information drink you will have the possibility to ask your questions about working as a council member in an informal way and we will provide you information about the elections.

We hope to see you on the 15th.
